Calibre database problem

Well I was opening an issue in github when it went down..:blink:
so I will first report my problem here.

* KOReader version: 2015.11-1023-g773e24f
* Device: Aura 2nd edition

I'm setting up a reader for a friend of mine and I installed KSM and KoReader.
I use the User Defined driver to connect with Calibre (v1.48 for XP compatibility)
It does see the books in the .Books directory I have on the internal card.
In the metadata.calibre file I can see that it writes the addresses of the files in the form of:
.Books/<path of the book>, something like .Books/King, Stephen/Stephen King - One For The Road.epub

When I try to use the search Calibre database option, I get an error like this:
File 'mnt/sd/.Books/<correct path to file>' does not exist
How can I make it mnt/onboard/.Books/<correct path to file>
I tried to 'Swap main and card A' in the drivers settings but no luck.

Another thing is that in the driveinfo.calibre file is written "location_code": "main".
Do I miss something here?

Update: github is up again so I opened an issue here.

Selecting Chinese Characters

Just wondering if there is some way to select more than one Chinese character from a text in an epub to look up in the dictionary. Couldn't see anything in the settings that would help.

KOreader only ever seems to select a single character, and there don't seem to be any toggles to expand it to look up a string of two or more characters. That's very limiting since many Chinese words consist of two characters and many idioms consist of four.

Are PDFs on e-readers really that bad?

After seeing this repeated several times it seems abundantly clear that tablets are a better choice for PDFs.

However, KOreader seems like an impressive piece of software and the e-ink screen makes an enormous difference. Therefore, I want to find out in more detail exactly how painful it is for the user to go through PDFs on e-readers, so that I can decide whether the trade-off is worth it according to my personal preferences. I'd say I'm willing to tolerate some discomfort if I can have the paper-like screen.

Unfortunately, I can't really gamble money on an e-reader and test it out myself because my budget is really limited, especially since the models with the larger screens are quite expensive.

If you could tell me more about your personal experiences with PDFs on any e-reader using KOreader, I would be very grateful!

Is it possible to specify poweroff image folder in KOReader?

In the latest stable release 1054, the menu contains the poweroff item. It appears the poweroff image is simply picked up from screensaver folder.

Is it possible to specify a different folder for poweroff image, making it easier to identify device state?

PDF highlights and Zotfile extraction

$

I'm a new user of Koreader, running it on a Kobo Aura One mostly for reading research material, which is to say most reading PDF documents. I'm very happy with Koreader as a PDF viewer - so first off, thanks a bunch for developing it!

I also use Zotero + Zotfile for management of PDFs. In my workflow, I highlight text in the PDF:s with Koreader, and then import those PDFs from the Kobo to Zotero. Using Zotfile I would like to extract the highlights.

Most of this works fine, except that Zotfile for some reason fails to extract the highlights made in Koreader, specifically. I assume this in fact is an issue with Zotfile's extraction routine, and not Koreader, since opening the PDFs in a PDF reader on the computer (in my case Okular), I can see the highlights (although they're black squiggly things covering the text). If I use Okular to re-highlight the highlighted text, Zotfile is then able to extract them without problems.

Now, as mentioned above, this does seem to be a problem with Zotfile, rather than Koreader, but I'm curious to know if anyone else is having a similar setup, and if there's a workaround? Are there any settings in Koreader I'm missing? Is anyone else doing anything similar to what I'm trying to do with better success?

Change paragraph style?

I'm reading an epub book using koreader, and the paragraph style that's being used is indentation of first line in each paragraph. I prefer the style of having paragraphs not being indented, and instead having some space in between them.

So I figured I could probably change that using css. So I edited epub.css and added these lines, figuring that it should override whatever style is included in the book, or defined elsewhere in koreader:

Code:

p {
    text-indent: 0em !important;
    margin-top: 0.2em !important;
    margin-bottom: 0.2em !important;
}

But it doesn't work, paragraphs are still indented, and the margins are not appearing. What am I doing wrong here?

Installed Koreader on a Kobo Aura HD. None of the gestures seem to work like panning or the zoom gestures. Is this a limitation of the device?

None of the gestures seem to work in Koreader on my Kobo Aura HD. E.g. panning in flip mode, or any of the zoom gestures. Is this expected/a limitation of this device?

Koreader is awesome. Really takes ka1 to another level. One thing. When I try the Diagonal Screenshot, it'll flash like its taken a photo, but I can't find it in the screenshot folder.

I'm delighted to see that KOReader has Calibre connect bundled in. But, when it connects it prompts me to "Choose inbox".

I'd rather not quess what my best next move is. Suggestions? Maybe a bit of the big picture too, please.

hi,

I can't find the option to revert my mini status bar to the normal one in the 1082 build (I set it to mini long time ago and update for the first time in 1 month). I could change the setting "DCREADER_PROGRESS_BAR from 1 to X but I don't remember the X values...

Any direction ?

Free Zooming on PDF

Hi! Is it possible to free zoom in a PDF file with the pinch to zoom gesture? Like a tablet or the kindle pdf reader?

I try to use the gesture, but it either adjusts to a box of text if I do fast, or it higlights or changes the pages...

Thanks!

When I try to open a certain book I receive the message "KOReader exited irregularly".

By splitting the book I have managed to narrow it down to the pages in the attached file.

Can anyone see what's wrong?

Thanks!

Is the PDF experience better with a text layer?

$

First off, I've yet to install KOReader so these are pre-install questions...

KOReader has an OCR function, which is awesome, but how accurate do you find it? I suspect it depends on the image quality? Also, with a Kobo Aura (original), will the OCR process chew through the CPU causing battery drain and sluggish behaviour?

Before installing KOReader, I've been ingesting PDF's into Calibre, but only those with a text layer. I'm looking for as close to an e-pub experience as possible, so my assumption is Reflow works best with text layer as opposed to OCR'd image layer.

Is this assumption anywhere close to accurate? :chinscratch:

Thanks!

Can I delete the 'kbmenupngs' folder?

$

To be honest, I've already done this - deleting the 'kbmenupngs' folder from my device after first installing and seeing the png's in Nickel's library - and so far Nickel & KOReader seem to be working fine with it gone.

I'm just wondering if there's a known issue I should watch out for.

My books are sorted into Collections via Calibre, and I don't think the png's folder can be managed in Calibre. Down the road, these KOReader png's would get buried by new books, rendering them useless to me. I can just reboot and get into KOReader anyway...

My PDF's are in a hidden .PDF. folder on the device, and KOReader sees it fine after checking the setting to show hidden files, while Nickel doesn't recognize them. All good so far!

I suppose I could have created a Collection on the device for these KOReader png's, but not sure how Calibre would handle that, seeing as I have automatic syncing turned on (which might have Calibre delete my custom png collection as it doesn't see any books in it).

Anyway, thoughts on deleting this folder?

Thanks!

KA1 Missing "Columns" Option

$

I installed KSM8 + KA1 patch & latest KOReader nightly on my Kobo Aura One, all went well.

The reason why I wanted to try it is the 2 column view in a landscape mode on the bigger screen of the KA1. The option shown on one of the screenshots here: https://imgur.com/a/1NR7I/all is missing.

Again, I'm trying this on a KA1 with a standard epub (tried a few). All I see in that menu are the options "View Mode", "Line Spacing", and "Margin". The other options such as "Columns" (the one that I want) and "Text Align" are missing.

Are they disabled by default? Do I need to edit a config file somewhere to turn them on?
