Diferences among various rendering modes

In version 2019.08 there are various rendering modes: legacy, flat, book and web. What are the differences among them? Which is the better for my Kobo Aura One? At first glance they all seem very similar.

ps: thank You for that great piece of software. :thanks:

Koreader 2019.08 doesn't center image due to text-align: center

Hi guys,
Although this is a very very minor thing, I have a book (epub) where each chapter heading consists of an upper image, text and lower image, and all of them are centered by the text-align: center directive in CSS. Look at the first image how it looks like in KOReader (Android build) (1st image) and for comparison, in some other app and also in Calibre:
Attachment 173158
Attachment 173159

I saw that you do a lot in improving the CSS/HTML rendering in crengine, so thought perhaps you would be interested in this as a test case.

According to this discussion I believe that text-align should be applied also to images, not only texts:

Question/Wish in support of external dictionaries on Android

$

Hi guys,
At first many thanks for adding support of a few selected external dictionaries into Koreader.:thanks:
Even though I do not use any of them, I added my dictionary to dictionaries.lua and it is working perfectly fine and this is the reason I have started to read with KOReader

The question is now, whether you plan to go one step further and let users select which of the installed apps should be used as a dictionary ? (for example, PockedBook reader app offers it)

Thanks again, Norbert

Fake sleep mode on Kindle PW1 (bug)

$

I have installed KOReader on a Kindle PaperWhite 1 and found an annoying bug. When I start sleep mode from the menu Exit/Sleep or press the on-off button of the reader itself, the reader seemingly goes into sleep mode (lights will be off, screensaver picture appears) but actually it doesn't happen. The touch screen is responsible, and the text immediately comes back on a touch and you can use everything. Pressing the on-off button again (KOReader thinks the reader is in sleep mode), the light comes back but otherwise nothing happen apart from a flash because the screen is already shows the text of the book.
Actually if you send the reader into sleep mode, the real sleep mode happens only after 10 minutes invoked by the kindle firmware.

I think somebody tried to wrote about this earlier here: https://github.com/koreader/koreader/issues/3068

Feature request

I am using KoReader, now with a Kobo Clara HD, and love it. I do have one request for an enhancement:

When I set the frontlight's warmth to 'Auto', I can set the time at which it reaches the maximum warmth. After that time (23:00) the light starts to get whiter again. What I would really like is to be able to set the time when it reaches maximum warmth, AND set how many hours it will stay at maximum warmth, after which the light will progressively get warmer.

If this could be done, KoReader would be perfect!

Many thanks!

Is it possible to export sqlite3 kindle ebooks to PDF?

Hello to all the community

I provide the reason of my question.

On Amazon I have purchased a Kindle format book. It is available only kindle format, no paper, no PDF no other e-reader format, otherwise I would have purchased it in paper edition.

In few words, I prefer paper. Also the PDF ones, I go to some printing shop and print them, expecially technical manuals.

At amazon they say you can only read it on kindle or online (read.amazon.com) or on the mobile app,

no way to export it to PDF or to print it unless you don't print every page or make screenshots

Does KOReader allow to open a contemporary kindle book and to export it to PDF?

Thank you

Koreader 2019.09 Toggle Frontlight causes a full system hangup on Tolino FW10 (ICS)

Sorry for bad news, but today I installed the september version on my Tolino FW10 ICS, and noticed first, that now I am able to control the frontlight intensity, after having disabled the use system settings checkbox (which was not working here with august version for some reason, only on Tolino FW12 Kitkat).
But then it occcured ... I wanted to see what the button Toggle in Frontlight menu does, clicked it and then the display was immediately black and the device remained completely hanging, I had to issue a system reset with the reset micro button. After restart device was Ok, but each Koreader start caused the same hangup and I had to reset the device.
Just to isolate, I did the following:
1. Uninstalled Koreader and installed again, but again the same picture - full hangup after first Koreader start
2. So it became clear, that there must be something wrong in the sdcard/koreader data, so I renamed this folder, reinstalled koreader again and it was working afterwards ...

Then I saved working sdcard/koreader also in another folder, just to see what is changed there on clicking of the Frontlight Toggle, and took also logcat from the koreader startup and clicking Toggle - see attached:

apparently last related activity was this:
D/FrontLight( 2137): Light====>SYS. brightness orig 0 conv 0

and then I saw on my PC screen capturing logcat, on each Tolino screen click, a couple of lines like event dropped :
Dropped event because input dispatch is disabled.

Then I reseted the device, copied both sdcard/koreader folders to PC, and compared - there are some differences in the settings.reader.lua,
both are attached.

At the end, I only copied settings.reader.lua from the saved sdcard/koreader folder to the current one, and next start of koreader worked like a charm

Attached is the logcat with the click of Frontlight Toggle button, with a
good and bad reader settings lua files

Attached Files
File Type: txt crash.txt (125.2 KB)
File Type: txt settings.readerCrash.lua.txt (7.3 KB)
File Type: txt settings.readerGood.lua.txt (7.3 KB)

I have a Forma. Why should I use KOReader? :)

Koreader > Calibre Wireless Device Connection

Hi,

I've installed Koreader on my Boyue Likebook Mimas and I'm trying to use koreader's wireless connection to Calibre.

I can successfully connect to Calibre from Koreader as long as I don't set a password and send eBooks to the device, but on reconnect Calibre can't see the eBooks I previously transmitted nor sync reading position.

Is this normal behaviour or am I messing something up?

How to let koreader on Android open the last book after startup ?

Sorry for the question, but is this possible (Koreader 2019.09) ?
I am only able to mark the folder of the last book as HOME in file explorer,
and then at least koreader shows this after next start,
but for me the expected behaviour would be either:
1. Open the last book
2. Open the History of last opened books

Please le me know perhaps I am only overlooking something

:thanks: Norbert

Hide "up"(..) directory?

$

KOReader 2019.3 - Kindle KT4

I've created a folder named Library and I'm using the file explorer in Mosaic view.

Is there a way to hide the "up" directory (..)?
I've tried renaming the higher directory from Library to .Library. It hides it (obviously) but doesn't hide the ".." folder. Can't rename the ".." (obviously, its a basic linux command).

I would like my collection to just be the Book covers and everything is saved from my personal OPDS to this folder, and I really don't have any need to navigate other folders, although hiding the folder would be optimal so I can show hidden folders if ever needed.

If this isn't possible, then I guess this is a feature request.

[Bug/Kindle] Disabled frontlight reset to 0

Hello,

I think I encounter a bug on my Kindle PW4 (FW 5.12.1): if the frontlight is disabled when I exit from KOreader then, when I'm back, the light level is set to 0 so it can't re-enabled it to its previous setting (tap the bottom-left corner always returns "disabled").

Of course, I can live with it, but maybe it's not that hard to fix. :)

[Bug/Kindle] Can't jump forth and back

Hello,

(Maybe it's in fact a request, because I'm not sure it's once was the case.)

On my PW4 (FW 5.12.1), when you go to another point, let's say a footnote, and you use the "Go to the previous place" menu item, you can't then go back to the footnote in the same way (the item is set unavailable). I think the expected behavior here is that the place you are back from becomes the new "previous place" once you are back. There are documents (typically when the footnotes are not links and you have to use bookmarks) where it would be very useful to be able to go forth and back like this. 2¢ ;)

Battery discharge in sleep mode

I detect in the latests versions that my kobo h2o is discharging a lot in sleep mode. The only difference is that I configure the automatic power off In 48 hours. Could be this is discharging the battery where the device is sleeping?. I don't detect this problem previously....
Other change is that I install the latest version of firmware kobo In the device... but I think this is not the problem....

Thanks!

Different styles for landscape and portrait?

$

Hi, I am using and enjoying KoReader on my Kobo Forma and have tweaked many settings to get a great experience. There's just one thing on my wish list I haven't been able to figure out.

I like to switch between landscape and portrait frequently. I find one or the other more comfortable depending on how I'm sitting/lying, and sometimes I just like to switch to stop one position getting cramped.

I'd love to be able to automatically switch styles when I rotate, to either:
a) increase the margins on landscape, so the line-length stays similar to portrait, OR
b) decrease the font-size on landscape and take advantage of the two-column layout

Is it possible? I know how to do this in css using @media (orientation: landscape), but my attempts to do this through a styletweak css (or epub.css) have not been successful.

Finding books from KOReader

Hoping somebody with more experience using these devices and apps could provide some basic guidance which I was unable to find clear answers to....

Family member has a Kindle Touch, now jailbroken, installed with KUAL / KOReader and has a working wi-fi connection with Calibre.

They are not technical, and I'm looking for a simple working method for them to be able to view the Calibre collection and then *pull* books from Calibre over wi-fi to the device.

Presently, they can view Calibre library via the content server as a web-page, but still need to then advice me which books I should *push* from Calibre to the device. Would be much easier if they can pull directly from the collection on the Kindle itself...

I had thought "Find a book in calibre catalogue" in KOReader would query Calibre over wi-fi and let them find and pull a book, but it doesnt provide results except the starter user guide book already on the local device...

Ideally, due to storage limitations of the Kindle and no external storage option, it would be ideal to have content on the PC, and they view the catalogue and pull what they need for offline reading when they travel directly from the Kindle itself over the local network.

Hope it can be done, any advice appreciated, thanks in advance, cheers!
:thanks:

Docker Calibre and KOReader

Hello, I'm having a problem with connecting my kobo aura one running koreader with my calibre server.

This is my setup:
Docker swarm.
port 8083:8080 #guac
port 8081:8081 #webserver

After using the guac interface to enable the server it is reachable on <swarm-node>:8081.
Since it's running in a swarm, the server is accessible from any node at port 8081.
Running for example 192.168.1.244:8081 in the browser works. (from another machine on the same network).
Using that under "calibre wireless connection" ultimately results in an info message saying:
"Cannot connect to calibre server."

On a sort of related side not, I've been trying to figure out where koreader stores its logs but haven't been able to find anything, would probably help a bit if I knew where it was ^^
